Pioneering Digital Twin Technology for SdVs

The TWIN-LOOP Project “TwinOps and vehicle specific Digital Twin for Software Defined EVs” has had its official kick-off meeting on 21st – 22nd of January in Barcelona.

Patrick Stracke and Alexander Fandakov were there in Barcelona to represent IAV.

Funded by the European Union under the Horizon Program, with a total budget of 5 Million €, involving a Consortium of 13 partners led by Mosaic Factor, TWIN-LOOP builds on a new opportunity on computational capacity of clouds and vehicles due to the implementation of High-Performance Computing combined with digitization of Electric Vehicles (EVs)under the SDV architecture.

In its 36 months, the TWIN-LOOP will develop an Open Framework for TwinOps for EVs along with a suite of digital tools aimed at continuously improving Energy Consumption, Hardware Costs, Driver Experience and Vehicle Resiliency across the four stages of the vehicle lifecycle. The project will implement the Open Framework, integrate with EV specific tools and assess their eMectiveness in realistic conditions across three diMerent use cases, identified for their relevance to the topic.

As stated by Guido Sacchetto, EC Policy OMicer coordinating the 2Zero partnership, "In the future, a high % of the value of a vehicle is expected to be in electronics and software. As electric vehicles become software-defined, connected and increasingly autonomous, a need arises to develop Software development approaches for the next generation of electric vehicles. This is what the TWIN-LOOP project under the “2Zero” partnership aims to develop: An Open Framework for EV TwinOps, combining Digital Twins with DevSecOps in an infinite loop. As we face a paradigm shift in our industry, it is critical for Europe to master critical technologies while maintaining our technological sovereignty".

Indeed, the initiative will also focus on fostering synergies between various sectors and stakeholders, aligning with European priorities and strategic partnerships like 2ZERO and Chips JU. This alignment ensures the transferability of expected outcomes and underscores TWIN-LOOP’s commitment to innovation management, research ambition, and market acceptance within the automotive industry.

“TwinLoop is a very innovative project that proposes an Open Framework for TwinOps and Digital Twin for Electric Vehicles to ultimately contribute to reduce EVs Energy Consumption. In an automotive sector now more than ever driven by cost, time and quality of several software components, we are researching a way to eSiciently enhance EV driver experience, while increasing safety as well as cybersecurity.

This poses challenges as computational capacity, diSerent behaviour of EVs components - depending on from the history of the vehicle-, and application of Agile methodologies (DevSecOps) combined with the need for automotive standards in terms of quality. At the same time, it tackles opportunities such as improving the EV performances from operational data, continuous testing and the creation of an Open Framework that supports specific EV Digital Twins” declared Stefano Persi, the project’s coordinator.

IAV plays a crucial role in the TWIN-LOOP project by focusing on advanced digital twin technologies, optimized battery management systems, cybersecurity solutions and agile development tools (TwinOps). These initiatives aim to shape the future of software-defined electric vehicles and drive innovation in the industry.
